Artist Statement: Walter Hoylman
Art is something to be savored by all of the senses. I connect with art in a number of ways, touch, sight, smell, anger, fear, taste or sound. I prefer ceramics because it is substantial. Usually, it can be held in the hands and caressed; smooth, rough, shiny, or matt, all by design to convey my vision. I find myself very intrigued by a unique form that is also functional and can be used as part of a daily routine. I have always liked art that at first glance I am not quite sure what it might be, but with further investigation, there is an aha moment of discovery when it becomes something else. Within my work, I would like the viewer to desire to pick it up, turn it in their hands, look at it from different angles. It is a part of me, it is a portion of my legacy. Inspiration can come from a number of places, a dream or vision, from past experiences or locations. Settling on the Central Coast, after a career in the film business, it is full of ocean delights from rocky beach cliffs to whales migrating up the coast have been an influence for clay projects.
